Like many of you, I have at one point or another wanted an mp3 of a youtube video so i could listen to the audio. Most of the time it’s because they never play the songs you really want to hear on the radio.
So, I’ve used more than one in my time, and I thought now was as good of a time to really compare them all as there are many and see which ones work the best, which have advantages, etc.
I did only test non-queued conversions. That is, many of them queue up so they don’t convert multiples in parallel. I tested only ones that went straight into conversion so the queue itself does not play into this test. I also made sure these were all really converting in real-time, as serving an mp3 from a queue is instantaneous, and does not really show what the converter is capable of.
So, so everyone can judge the audio for themselves, for those that I got an mp3, I tacked into a little player further down. Just hit the play button and listen for yourself.
So, without further ado, here is the breakdown, with a follow-up on each one, even with the converted mp3s where applicable to listen to so you can hear the differences for yourself.
| Site | Time to Convert | Filesize | Duration | Bitrate | Sample Rate | Channels | Format Correct | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
|
What the row colors mean: Green means they not only worked, but worked very well. You could make an audio cd using any common audio-cd burner tool, which would auto-decode the mp3 into .wav format for the cds. These you would use in car cd players, etc. Yellow means that while the mp3s worked and you could listen to them, they leave something to be desired. Might be major, might be minor. But you do have an mp3 after the conversion that works. Orangish means that while the mp3 would play, it would only play in certain players like MPlayer. The file would not play in windows media player, which you can see as the play button doesn’t work on those. Red means total failure. You didn’t get a working mp3 you can listen to. One case the files were junk, the other I have no idea how many hours it would take for one mp3. |

EasyMovieConverter.com
EasyMovieConverter’s mp3s were able to burn to an audio cd(meaning they had to be decoded) which means the format is correct. The site also has many other conversion types beyond mp3.
The EasyMovieConverter.com mp3
Video2mp3.net
Video2mp3’s mp3s were able to burn to an audio cd(meaning they had to be decoded) which means the format is correct.
Gazzump.com
Gazzump’s mp3s were not able to decode to burn to audio cd, meaning the format of the mp3 was off. The mp3, while you could listen to it, was a little inferior at 64 kbps/22050 Hz and was the regular version.
Vidtomp3.com
Vidtomp3’s mp3s were not able to decode to burn to audio cd, meaning the format of the mp3 was off. The mp3, while you could listen to it, was fairly inferior at 8 kbps/22050 Hz and was the regular version. Also, it reports as a time of 40:23. To sum up, the encoding could use some work.
Also take note, it does not play in windows media player. That is why the play button below tries to play, but fails(in most operating systems).

2conv’s mp3s were not able to decode to burn to audio cd, meaning the format of the mp3 was off. The mp3, while you could listen to it and was at 128 kbps/44100Hz and was the regular version. That is, it was upcoded from a lower version, making it inferior to the HQ version. It also reported the mp3 playing time at 3:29 for some reason.
Also take note, it does not play in windows media player. That is why the play button below tries to play, but fails(in most operating systems).
vixy.net
Vixy.net, despite trying more than one time on more than one day, never yielded a playable mp3. That is, the best I got was an empty mp3.
mediaconverter.org
Mediaconverter.org I can’t really judge, as it never converted anything. It gives you 5 conversions allowed, and the first one failed in a split second, so my next try of the 4 remaining did go into the queue. As of 1 hr 20 mins, it never started so I left the test on this converter at that.
Summary
Well, the results above speak for themselves.
